Muscadet de Sevre et Maine, Loire
Located in the village of Gorges, 35 miles from where the Loire River meets the Atlantic Ocean, this estate covers 75 acres. Grapes have been grown and wine made in this part of the Loire since the Middle Ages.
Le Pavillion du Roy has records of its vineyard leases dating from the 14th century. Property of the Aulanier family since 1767, the buildings and gardens at Le Pavillion du Roy bear a strong Italian influence. The vines grow in a light alluvial soil over limestone. The winemaker is Thomas Batardière.
The Muscadet Sèvre et Maine area extends across some twenty communes to the south east of Nantes. It takes its name from the two rivers flowing through the vineyards: the Sèvre Nantaise and the Maine.
Recognized in 1936, Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is one of France’s oldest AOCs. It is the largest regional appellation of the Nantes wine region in terms of surface area and production volume, with 15,808 acres and 425 winegrowers. Located between the Sèvre and the Maine (the two last tributaries of the Loire before it reaches the ocean), this appellation is authorized to use the ‘sur lie’ method.
