DOMAINE d'ALZIPRATU
Zilla - Balagne region of Corsica
Domaine d’Alzipratu is located in the Balagne region just south of Calvi in northwestern Corsica. The 59 acre property is divided into two parcels. Baron Henry Louis de la Grange planted the principal parcel, which sits on land that was once part of the property of the former convent of Alzipratu, which the baron still owns. Both parcels benefit from their proximity to the 2,000-meter-high Monte Grossu and the Mediterranean. The sea breezes reduce the risk of mildew infections, while the coolness of the mountains allow the grapes to slowly ripen to maturity.
In the 1990's, Pierre Acquaviva took over this property, along with 39 acres of vines that his father also farmed near the Calvi Airport. His father sold his grapes to a cooperative, but the younger Acquaviva has been steadily improving the vineyard, planting only native grape varieties without pesticides or insecticides.
