Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair

Marsannay,  Burgundy

Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair was founded in 1979 when Jean-Louis Fougeray, the father of the current owners made his very first Marsannay cuvee. If Jean-Louis took the first steps to commercialization, his father (the grandfather of Laurence and her sister Evelyne) was the one who started the current operation (18 hectares): he had worked with the Clair family of the renowned Clair-Daü estate and there was a strong bond of friendship. That bond continued into the next generation with Bernard Clair and Jean Louis Fougeray.

In 1986 Bernard Clair was retiring and decided that he would lease some vines to his friend Jean-Louis Fougeray who was by then already exploiting 27 acres, rather than as expected pass them to the next generation of the Clairs. Those were not just any old vines, they included a special parcel of Bonnes-Mares, some Chambolle-Musigny and more Marsannay. In so doing, they grounded the re-named Domaine Fougeray de Beauclair - ‘Beauclair’ coming from a blend of Jean-Louis’ wife’s name and Clair.

Today, Jean-Louis’ daughter Laurence and her husband Patrice Olliver run the estate.

Marsannay is a village appellation located in the Côte de Nuits region.  Producing communes are Marsannay-la-Côte, Couchey and Chenôve.  On the label, the appellation Marsannay may be followed by the name of the Climat of origin.

Regarded as the “Golden Gate to the Côte de Nuits”, the appellation Marsannay covers the communes of Chenôve, Marsannay-la-Côte and Couchey. There is evidence of vineyards here, as is the case of the rest of the Côte, as early as the 7th century and the prestige of this vine-growing region is long established. The Abbey of Bèze, the Bishop of Autun, the Dukes of Bourgogne, and many others have owned vines here and the wines found their way to the tables of Louis XIV and Louis XVl. As late as the 19th century, some Climats enjoyed a classification equivalent to today’s Grands Crus.

Information by:  Burgundy Wines

The vines extend from North to South along the best parts of the hill-slope. The vineyards are located at altitudes of 255 to 390 meters above sea-level. Exposures range from due east to south. The soils, derived from mid-Jurassic strata, are very diverse in their composition.
